SECTION A – READING SKILLS 20 Marks
Q1. Unseen Passage – 1 (10 Marks)

The Quiet Power of Attention

In a world where information arrives continuously through screens, the ability to pay attention has become an increasingly valuable skill. People often confuse being busy with being productive. They may respond to dozens of messages, move rapidly between tasks and remain occupied throughout the day, yet struggle to complete work that requires sustained thought. The problem is not always a lack of time; sometimes it is the fragmentation of attention.

Attention is not merely the act of looking at something. It involves selecting what deserves mental energy and resisting distractions that compete for it. When a student studies while repeatedly checking notifications, the mind must constantly shift between unrelated activities. Each shift may appear insignificant, but together they can interrupt understanding and make learning less efficient.

Deep attention, however, does not require complete isolation from the world. It requires deliberate choices. A student might silence unnecessary notifications, divide a difficult assignment into manageable stages and take short breaks between periods of concentrated work. Such habits create conditions in which complex ideas can be examined patiently rather than superficially.

There is also a social dimension to attention. Listening carefully to another person communicates respect. In classrooms, workplaces and families, people may hear words without truly considering their meaning. Genuine listening involves curiosity, patience and a willingness to reconsider one's assumptions.

Yet attention should not be confused with rigid concentration. Rest, recreation and meaningful conversation are also necessary. A mind that never pauses may become exhausted rather than effective. The goal is not to eliminate every distraction but to develop control over where and when attention is directed.

Ultimately, attention is a form of choice. It determines not only what we learn but also which relationships we nurture and which problems we are prepared to understand. In an age of constant stimulation, learning to direct attention thoughtfully may be one of the most practical forms of self-discipline.

Q2. Unseen Passage – 2 (10 Marks)

Restoring Urban Green Spaces

Cities are often associated with concrete buildings, crowded roads and expanding commercial areas. However, urban green spaces such as parks, tree-lined streets, community gardens and wetlands play an important role in making cities healthier and more liveable. Their value extends far beyond their appearance.

Trees provide shade and can reduce the intensity of heat experienced by pedestrians. Vegetation also helps absorb some air pollutants, while parks offer residents places for walking, exercise and recreation. Wetlands can temporarily store excess rainwater, reducing pressure on drainage systems during heavy rainfall. These benefits become particularly relevant as cities experience rising temperatures and increasingly irregular weather patterns.

Green spaces also influence social life. A neighbourhood park can provide a shared setting where people of different ages and backgrounds meet. Community gardens may encourage residents to cooperate, exchange knowledge and take responsibility for a common resource. Such spaces can strengthen local connections in areas where people otherwise have few opportunities to interact.

Nevertheless, creating green spaces is not simply a matter of planting trees wherever land is available. Poorly planned projects may consume scarce water, damage existing ecosystems or remain inaccessible to people living in distant neighbourhoods. Maintenance is equally important. A park that is constructed but neglected may quickly become unsafe or unusable.

Urban planning therefore needs to consider the distribution, design and long-term care of green spaces. Residents should be consulted because they understand local needs, including the requirements of children, older people and persons with disabilities. Native plants can often be useful because they are adapted to local conditions and may support local wildlife.

Green spaces cannot solve every urban problem, nor can they replace reliable public transport, effective waste management or adequate housing. They are, however, an essential part of a broader approach to sustainable development. A city becomes more resilient when environmental planning is integrated with social needs and public participation.
